Photographing Kids
February 28, 2017 by Mike Smith in Events, People, Photography 0 Comments

Every now and then, I get asked to photograph kids; whether it be doing sports, at school or playing it’s always a major challenge but lots of fun! Kids wear their feelings on the outside and this makes them brilliant subjects. With a little goading, you can get them to pull the most brilliant faces and they in turn will have lots of fun in the process, and when they interact with each other or adults, that’s when they can pull some truly unique expressions! Last week I was asked along to one of the local schools to take some photographs for their website. The job was to take photographs of everything going on throughout the day. From kids working, playing and getting involved in sports to the facilities they have at the school, it was a major challenge. Someone said never work with animals and kids……I say if you want to better your craft, always work with animals and kids! It makes all of the other jobs so much easier…..unless you’re a wedding photographer……. I had the challenge of mixed lighting, skylights, and tungsten lights mixed with daylight fluorescents and big windows letting in lots of daylight. So in […]

Daddy Funk – THE drum teacher to have in Birmingham!
November 14, 2016 by Mike Smith in People 2 Comments

As well as photography, I make short films and promos. My UK based company (Boxhead Media) is where all of my films live, as well as on my vimeo page. You can also click on the image above to see Daddy Funk’s promo video! Over the last year, I’ve been filming a lot with Daddy Funk (a.k.a. Simon Greenhill). Whenever, I shoot a film, I always try to get my stills camera out and get some behind the scenes shots to use and some action shots whilst we’ve got the lights up! With Simon, we did just that and he performed magnificently! Simon is a great drum teacher and really is a guru in the industry. He has so many endorsements (Istanbul Agop Cymbals & Los Cabos Drumsticks, in association with BR Distribution in the UK), and so much talent that if you want a drum teacher and you live in Birmingham, he’s the man to see. In January 2016, we filmed a promo video together. This showcased his talents and highlighted his skills as a drummer and a teacher. Click here for the video. In September, we filmed his teachings which will be spread out over several different videos. […]

Sam Light and Slingshot
November 14, 2016 by Mike Smith in People, Sports 0 Comments

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of traveling down to Cornwall to shoot some photographs with Sam Light and Slingshot. I love shooting kitesurfers. With a long lens and a canon 7D, you can get some great shots getting the camera onto fully automatic! Although it eats up memory cards like nothing else!! The weather in the UK can be quite fickle at the best of times. When a shoot depends on the weather, you have to be extremely lucky, or persistent until you get the right conditions. We ended up being lucky as we didn’t have time to wait for the perfect conditions……………..although the wind could have been a little stronger! Sam needed some shots for a video project he was working on with Patrick Wieland, so Rich Lane from Slingshot UK got in touch and got me along for the day. The wind forecast was a little bit touch and go on the Sunday we were heading down, and after many calls and texts, we decided on Hawkers Cove, near Padstow. It took a while for the wind to build, but by 10am it was blowing. Sam, Rich and Ben headed out on the new 2017 slingshot […]

Maverick Race
November 10, 2016 by Mike Smith in Events, People, Sports 2 Comments

Over the summer I was lucky enough to be the Maverick Race official photographer. Initially, I thought this would be a relatively straight forward job………………………….I was very wrong! Taking photographs of runners in some pretty amazing places sounds like a dream job, and it was. But one thing I forgot to think about was my fitness levels for the event. Now I consider myself a pretty fit guy; I eat well, I train periodically and I do lots of different sports from kitesurfing to mountain biking. But, running is a very different kind of fitness. The job was to capture the feel of the day shooting the runners, the location and the countryside. So I headed to the first event in Somerset programming into the satnav a beautiful place called Fingle Bridge. After a two and a half hour drive, I arrived at 8am and got all of my kit ready after doing a recce. There was lots of opportunities for great images and it looked like it would be a great day’s shooting. The runners started turning up and I started shooting. When people are comfortable in their environment or are focusing on something else, it makes it easy […]
